Each tool includes usage boundaries, when NOT to use it, and what to do after sending.

How to use these tools

  1. 1. 选场景1. Pick a scenario

Not everything needs a script. Decide first: are you trying to repair, set a boundary, or just de-escalate?

2. Fill in real context

Specificity matters. "Fought with girlfriend" → generic. "She forgot our anniversary" → editable.

3. Make it yours

Generated text is draft zero. Delete anything that doesn't sound like you.

The Communication Science Behind These Tools

Not guesswork — decades of psychological research. Here's what's behind every tool:

Gottman's Repair Attempts

来源:gottman.com Gottman studied thousands of couples and found that relationship repair depends on post-conflict recovery, not conflict avoidance. His "Repair Dictionary" informs every tool's phrase logic. Source: gottman.com

(NVC) Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

来源:cnvc.org Rosenberg's NVC framework: Observe → Feel → Need → Request. Tools that distinguish "describe facts" from "judge" draw directly from NVC. Source: cnvc.org

Emotion Regulation Theory

When emotionally aroused, the brain's "rational center" goes offline (Gross's Emotion Regulation Process Model). That's why tools prompt you to wait 10 minutes and pick "send when calm" — not platitude, neuroscience.

Attachment Theory

Bowlby & Ainsworth's attachment research shows secure attachers repair conflicts better because they can express vulnerability alongside needs. Tools that prompt "express feelings, not just arguments" are grounded here.

Boundary Psychology

Adding explanation after "no" is often healthier, but sometimes no reason is more effective. Research shows ambiguous refusals invite repeated probing — the boundary-setting tools address this tension directly.

Cognitive Reframing

Beck & Ellis's CBT found the same event can be interpreted multiple ways. The "re-narrative" feature draws from this: shifting "you're always late" to "I feel dismissed" — not wordplay, cognitive reframing.

Note: These principles inform the tool design, not professional therapy. If you're experiencing ongoing relational distress, please seek a licensed therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is "phrasing" manipulation? ▶

Manipulation's essence: using someone to get what you want regardless of their feelings. HeartTalk's core question: "Do I want to repair, or do I want to win?" If it's win, these tools won't help. Every phrase aims for authentic expression + minimizing harm — not "make them do what I want."

A test: if you'd feel guilty reading the generated text aloud in front of them, you shouldn't send it.

When should I NOT use these tools? ▶

Skip the tools in three situations: ① Either of you is highly emotionally activated — words written in anger/grief/fear usually make things worse; wait 24 hours. ② You find yourself "researching techniques" while the other person is clearly avoidant — that's not a communication problem, it's a boundary problem. ③ Domestic violence, threats, or controlling behavior — not a phrasing issue; contact professionals.

Why does the output sound "a bit fake"? ▶

Because it's "draft zero," not the final version. Generated output is a skeleton — you need to add your own tone, habitual phrases, and shared history. For some people, "sorry" feels natural; for others it's distancing. Spend 2 minutes editing, and you get 10× more authentic results than sending it as-is.

Does the "reconcile ex" tool actually work? ▶

Honest answer: mostly not as much as you'd hope. Breakups usually mean structural problems can't be solved by a message. But the tool does one useful thing — it helps you assess whether the timing is right. If your ex has clearly said "don't contact me," any message reinforces that boundary rather than breaking it. The reconciliation tool's first step forces you to confront this reality.

When is saying nothing better than any phrase? ▶

Often. ① When they've clearly asked for space and time — any "nice words" violate the boundary. ② In the first 24 hours after conflict — the brain hasn't calmed, and written words are often harmful. ③ When you haven't clarified what you actually want — "I just want to fix things" is too vague. You need specifics: "I want to continue this, but I need X from you." Before clarity, silence beats mis-speaking.

I'm introverted / not good at expressing myself — are these tools for me? ▶

Especially for you. Introverts often excel at "thinking before speaking" — which is exactly what these tools encourage. The goal isn't to make you chatty; it's to help you articulate what you've already thought through. The common introvert mistake isn't "can't speak up" — it's "not clear enough when speaking," causing misunderstanding. These tools address the latter.

Do these phrases work cross-culturally / in international relationships? ▶

Every tool has cultural limits — indirect Chinese expressions like "I think we need to talk" vary wildly in effect across cultures. For international relationships, cross-reference with your partner's cultural communication norms. Use generated output as a starting point, then ask: "If I were them, how would I react to this?"

Do I need to follow up after sending? ▶

Almost always. One message is just the opening. If they reply, respond to their reply. If they don't, give them time — but not more than 2 weeks (silence beyond 2 weeks means you need to reassess the relationship's state). Repair isn't "sent, done" — it requires sustained, visible behavioral change.

How do these tools differ from therapy? ▶

Tools are "tactics"; therapy is "strategy." Tools solve "how do I say this specific thing." Therapy helps you understand "why do I always say/do this kind of thing." If the same pattern repeats across relationships, tools help temporarily but can't cure the root — see a therapist in that case.

How are you different from online "relationship rescue" services? ▶

Three key differences: ① We make no outcome promises — good relationships can't be bought with phrases. ② We tell you when NOT to use the tools — relationship services often push you to "keep messaging" until blocked. ③ We're free, account-free, no data collection — no profit motive to prolong your anxiety. If you need to be told "send message 3," we can't help you.

Tool 01 · Daily friction

Apology Phrase Generator

3 styles

Not just "sorry" — this tool separates "I was wrong", "how I feel", and "what I'll do". Includes a severity self-check: figure out if this is even worth apologizing for before you speak.

When NOT to use / Notes

If you picked "serious" and want to continue the relationship, the tool first runs a self-check: for infidelity, deception, or major concealment, a written apology is just the start. The other person needs sustained visible behavioral change (months), not a polished paragraph.

Don't start with "but": "I'm sorry, but didn't you also..." — this immediately turns an apology into a debate.

Tool 02 · Confession

Confession Message

Risk check

Most confession templates chase "wow factor" but the other person may cringe. This tool first asks whether they've explicitly turned you down, then gives three tiers (probe, semi-formal, formal) plus graceful retreat phrases — because the hard part isn't saying it, it's what comes after.

When NOT to use / Notes

If they've clearly turned you down: the tool only outputs "don't confess, maintain the relationship" options. A second confession isn't persistence — it's harassment.

If they're your subordinate, student, or client: never use this tool. Confession in a power-imbalanced context is pressure, not romance.

Tool 03 · Ending

Breakup Message

In-person first

The tool first asks "can you do this in person" — if yes, do it in person. Text breakup gets misread when emotions are high. Use the text version only when needed (long-distance, safety concern). Three tones: gentle-but-firm, brief, leave-the-door-open (not recommended — mixed signals).

When NOT to use / Notes

Don't break up via a shared friend's group chat, social media post, or on their important days (birthday, anniversary, exam day). That's not graceful — that's avoidance.

If they have a history of self-harm: be more careful. Consider informing a friend or family member they trust, and have crisis resources ready. Don't do it in secret.

Tool 04 · Daily friction

Misunderstanding Clarifier

Position check

"What did you mean by that?" is the most common and hardest question in relationships. This tool first checks your position — are you explaining, or proving yourself right? The two need different wording. Three tones: empathy-first, matter-of-fact, or with a "I can see how you might have read it as..." preamble.

When NOT to use / Notes

If your goal is "set a boundary" — that's legitimate, but state it directly, don't dress it up as an explanation. Otherwise they'll think you're apologizing without admitting it, and be angrier.

Tool 05 · De-escalation

Conflict De-escalation

Pause advice

Already mid-fight and it's going nowhere? This tool decides if now is the time to PAUSE — if both sides are heated, it doesn't give phrases, it gives pause plans: a scheduled letter, a 24h cool-off, a few cooling sentences. De-escalation isn't losing, it's protecting the relationship's chance of being fixed.

When NOT to use / Notes

If they're insulting, throwing things, or threatening — this isn't a conflict, it's abuse. You don't need phrases, you need to leave and get help.

Tool 06 · Needs

Constructive Grievance

NVC 框架NVC framework

Rewrites complaints using Nonviolent Communication: Observation (no judgment) + Feeling + Need + Request. Avoids "you always / you never" — which just makes them defensive. Get clear on what specific action you want, not "you need to change".

When NOT to use / Notes

NVC isn't for emergencies or unsafe situations (abuse, severe control). It fits everyday grievances where both people are basically safe.

Tool 07 · Empathy

Comfort Your Partner

No clichés

"Don't be sad" is the worst comfort — it invalidates. This tool distinguishes three needs: to be heard, to get a solution, or just to be accompanied. Includes a cliché filter that strips "everything will be fine" and "stay strong" automatically.

When NOT to use / Notes

If they say "I'm fine" — leave it. They'll talk when ready. This tool isn't for pressuring them to open up.

Tool 08 · Appreciation

Genuine Compliment (without cringe)

具体化Specificity

"You're so pretty" lands as nothing. This tool rewrites generic compliments into specific behavioral / detail / trait observations — research shows these feel more seen. Includes an anti-cringe detector that flags overuse of pet names.

When NOT to use / Notes

Complimenting publicly: ask first if they're comfortable being praised publicly. Some people find it awkward.

Tool 09 · Thaw

Cold War Thaw

Timing check

First judge if NOW is a good time to thaw — under 24h with both sides still hot, don't move; over a week silent, you may need a more formal opening than "can we talk". Three thaw styles based on duration: gentle probe, direct, third-party bridge.

When NOT to use / Notes

Thawing with pet photos or funny videos — short-term useful, long-term avoidance. If the core is "they don't respect me", no meme fixes that.

Tool 10 · Declining

Turn Down a Confession

No stringing

Hardest part of rejecting is fear of hurting. But "stringing along" hurts more — neither yes nor no, leaving them guessing. The tool first decides: genuinely no feeling, or just not ready? Former: clean rejection. Latter: "I'm not looking for a relationship right now" — honest. Three tones: warm-but-clear, direct, friendly (with possibility of staying friends).

When NOT to use / Notes

You're a great person, but..." has become a meme of bad rejections. It's neither sincere nor kind. If you genuinely think they're great, say specifically why. Drop the "but".

Tool 11 · Repair (high risk)

Reconciliation (with risk assessment)

Assess first

This is the highest-risk tool. We start with an honesty check — in most cases, not reconciling is better than reconciling. Only if you answer 6 questions and still want to proceed, we generate phrases. The phrases are restrained (no long "let's remember the past" essays) — only non-intrusive re-contact, three tiers.

Risk self-check (do this first)
Was the breakup mainly because of something serious I did (cheating, violence, deception)?
Has the other person clearly said "don't contact me again"?
Is my wish to reconcile driven by loneliness / fear of being single / loss of habit, rather than genuine reflection?
Can I accept that even if I do everything right, they may still say no?
Has this relationship had repeated breakups (more than 3 times)?
Is the other person emotionally stable right now (not in breakdown / depression / pressured by me)?

If any of the above is "yes" or "unsure", we strongly recommend not contacting them for 30 days. If 4+ are yes/unsure, consider speaking with a licensed counselor first.

Honest limits

Phrases here have a low success rate — most people who want to reconcile aren't emotionally ready for rational contact. Treat this as a self-restraint tool, not a "get them back" trick. If you find yourself obsessively wanting to contact them, losing sleep, or affecting work, do 4-6 weeks of strict No Contact first, then decide.

Tool 12 · Family

Introducing Partner to Parents

Parent-type match

First classify your parents: Traditional (cares about background, job)? Liberal (cares about personality)? Controlling (cares about obedience)? Different parents, different openings. Three tiers: prep message, formal intro, response to objections.

When NOT to use / Notes

Controlling parents: the tool can give softening phrases, not anti-control phrases. If they use threats of disowning or financial pressure, you need a support system (friends, therapist), not cleverer wording.

Tool 13 · Family

Meeting Partner's Parents

Checklist + phrases

"Meeting the parents" is the Chinese relationship big test — but most advice focuses on saying clever things, and people who try too hard often say the wrong thing. This tool gives a do/don't checklist plus phrases for the key moments (arrival, the first toast, "what are your future plans").

When NOT to use / Notes

Meeting parents isn't an exam to pass. Parental approval doesn't mean your relationship is healthy. Sometimes opposition reveals structural issues you've been ignoring.

Tool 14 · Expression

Anniversary / Confession Day Caption

Anti-cliché

"For the rest of my life, please guide me" — overused. This tool does a cliché check: if your keywords are too generic, it nudges you to add a specific detail (first place you met, the moment you fell for them). Output auto-replaces templates with your story.

When NOT to use / Notes

Before posting publicly: ask first. Some people see public posts as a privacy violation. "Surprise" can easily become "scare".

Tool 15 · Quick reply

Message Reply Helper

Reverse decode

Got a confusing / emotional / ambiguous message and not sure how to reply? This tool first "reverse-decodes" — what the other person likely means (A/B/C); then gives three replies: go along, clarify, probe. Also flags high-risk phrases ("whatever", "up to you" — often emotional signals, not literal).

When NOT to use / Notes

If their message contains explicit threats, self-harm, or abuse hints — don't generate a reply. Contact their trusted family / friends / crisis line immediately.

Tool 16 · Debrief

Post-Argument Debrief

Structured review

Review isn't score-settling. The tool gives a structure: ① Is the real conflict about facts or needs? ② Each person's underlying fear? ③ What to do differently next time? Output: a "communication memo" you can send or keep — gentler than debate, more solid than "forget it".

When NOT to use / Notes

Don't debrief within 24h of cooling down — that's just "fight 2.0". Wait until both of you can describe it in third person.

Tool 17 · Distance

Long-Distance Phrases

Rhythm tip

Long-distance relationships don't die of distance, they die of "no presence". Three scenarios: ① make them feel you're thinking of them (not just "good morning"), ② specific care when not around (not just "did you eat"), ③ expressing missing (not just "I miss you"). Each with a "cadence tip" — too often is annoying, too sparse is forgotten.

When NOT to use / Notes

If contact is already under 1x/week, don't suddenly send a long message — it adds pressure. Restore rhythm first, then deepen content.

Tool 18 · Daily love

Daily Love Expression

Not cheesy

"I love you" loses value with repetition. The tool gives 5 substitutes: gratitude ("thank you for..."), observation ("I noticed you..."), appreciation ("I really admire..."), companionship ("I want to..."), playful ("if it weren't for you..."). 7 days of varied examples.

When NOT to use / Notes

If they've recently said "I can't handle cheesiness" — skip playful too. Stick to observation and gratitude styles.

Tool 19 · Care

Caring Without Nagging

边界感Boundaries

Care vs surveillance differs by "would you like my help". The tool distinguishes caring boundaries — you can ask "how's today", not "why aren't you replying". Three caring styles: direct ask, indirect resource (a song, a place), action-based (order takeout, send flowers).

When NOT to use / Notes

If they've said "you're being too controlling" — pull back. Let care be "I'm here when you need me". The tool will give a more restrained version.

Tool 20 · Boundaries

Handling an Ex's Message

No entangle

Ex reaches out — to reconcile / apologize / borrow something / just chat? The tool first gauges their "intent", then gives four replies: warm-but-no-escalation, polite-but-boundary, direct refusal, transactional-only. Plus a contingency if they push.

When NOT to use / Notes

If they're harassing, controlling, or stalking: don't reply alone. Get a friend involved, preserve evidence, contact police if needed. The tool isn't for this.

Tool 21 · Proposal

Proposal Words & Prep

Pre-confirm

A failed proposal isn't just awkward — it can set the relationship back 6 months. The tool first does a "pre-confirm": have you talked about marriage? Public or private? If not, the tool first gives phrases for the pre-proposal conversation, not the proposal itself.

When NOT to use / Notes

Don't propose right after they lost a job, an exam, or a family event — the proposal will be tied to that low point. Even if they say yes, the memory won't be sweet.

Tool 22 · Asking out

Asking Someone Out

Activity design

"Are you free this weekend?" is the weakest opener — too broad, they can only say yes/no, awkward pause. Three tiers: direct (I saw X has Y, Saturday together?), flexible (any day this week? I'm free), probe (I've been wanting to try X, do you like Y?). Each with a backup if they hesitate.

When NOT to use / Notes

If they've twice given vague refusals — that's not shyness, that's no. One more ask, max. Beyond that, it's harassment.

Tool 23 · First date

First Date Topics & Taboos

Taboo detect

The biggest first-date killer is "interrogation" — where do you work? family? salary? The tool gives 10 specific topics (not "let's talk about work") plus 5 first-date taboos (ex, weight, religion/politics, marriage pressure, income details).

Hold Ctrl/Cmd to multi-select

When NOT to use / Notes

Topic lists are "safe topics", not "great topics". A truly great date comes from genuine curiosity about them. This tool is your safety net, not your script.

Tool 24 · Money

Money Conversations in Relationships

Sensitive

Money is one of the top reasons relationships end. This tool covers 4 common scenarios: split or one-pays, joint accounts, income gap, lending money. Each first checks both sides (income, savings, spending style), then gives phrases. Avoid: making it a "reveal" instead of a "consensus".

When NOT to use / Notes

If they have gambling, debt, or compulsive spending patterns — the financial conversation may not be step 1. Step 1 might be financial counseling + emotional support. The tool isn't for this.

Tool 25 · Goodbye

Farewell / Goodbye

分场景By scenario

Farewells vary widely: short (business trip), long (emigration, moving), may-never-again (relocating), or final (end-of-life, severe illness). Each needs different wording. The tool gives scenarios + helps you find "the one sentence you want to leave".

When NOT to use / Notes

For "final/end-of-life" scenarios — this tool is just a "what to say" aid. When truly needed, contact hospice / professional counseling.

About HeartTalk Studio

Content created by Content created by

HeartTalk Studio Team · Independent Developer

Content is grounded in psychological research literature (Gottman, NVC, Attachment Theory, CBT) by an independent creator with a background in interpersonal communication research. We are not licensed therapists; this toolkit does not replace professional care.

Who we are

HeartTalk Studio is an independent-creator-maintained toolkit for practicing intimate-relationship communication. We're not a counseling service, nor a matchmaker. We organize the things people want to say but struggle to articulate, into editable practice drafts — and tell you honestly when those phrases won't help.

Our editorial stance

We believe good relational communication isn't about "techniques" — it's about skill: understanding your own feelings, expressing them accurately, and respecting the other person's boundaries. These tools are a practice starting point, not a shortcut. Our editorial stance: authenticity beats技巧; boundaries beat compromise; long-term behavioral change beats short-term resolution.

Why we built this

Most "phrase generators" online just copy-paste templates — cheesy, inauthentic, or unhelpful. Our approach: each tool first runs a "position check" or "risk assessment", then gives specific editable phrases — and clearly tells you when not to use these tools.

Best for

① You have something specific to say to a partner / friend / family but don't know how to open; ② You already said it badly and want a "repair" opener; ③ You want to practice a communication style (e.g. nonviolent communication) to improve daily relationship quality.

Not for

① Domestic violence, self-harm, severe psychological crisis — contact professionals (see yellow banner at top); ② Using phrases to "win back" someone who's clearly stated they don't want contact — that's a boundary problem, not a phrasing problem; ③ Replacing real relationship repair work — phrases are a start, not a finish.

Limits

① All phrases are produced with a Chinese (or English) cultural backdrop; cross-cultural use requires careful adaptation. ② Tools are designed for common scenarios; every relationship is unique — generated text is "draft zero." ③ We don't store your inputs (see privacy), which also means no personalization based on history — an intentional trade-off.
